An afternoon at the Mug!

John's Frosted Mug is a restaurant slash bar located on the main drag in the small southwestern town of Forsyth Missouri. It's been around for almost forever as has the owner John Sumner. I like to frequent the joint for the main reason that it is only a mile or so from my place. And while the exterior might look a little worn with time, the inside features nice tables and bar stools.

On a otherwise dreary day in August, I ambled into the establishment's air conditioned coolness with a sense of relief, as my AC unit was on semi permanent hiatus. The bartender, on that day, was the ever beautiful Judy Brown; a professional if there ever was one! Honestly, I've never seen a customer have to wait very long to be served when Judy was behind the bar. (She has that kind of sixth sense or spacial awareness that separates a so-so type of employee from the Awesome kind of person who seems to know what you want even before you did)!

Also in attendance was Tim Evans, the chef, and just a smattering of 'regulars' such as Morrison, Wally, and my good friend Donnie Oakley who was the proud owner of an awesome Harley that looked to be in mint condition!

While I there, I had a chance to sample a slice of the Mug's signature pizza. And, while the picture at right is a bit fuzzy, it tasted just awesome. The Mug has a full menu, and over the years, I've sample many of their offerings, all of which have been first class in taste while staying at an affordable cost!

Spaghetti meal offered at the Mug!

Forsyth MO. - A great plate of spaghetti and meatballs is what I would call one of the true comfort foods to be had in this life. Add in a salad and a roll for $6.50 and what you got is a must have meal and a great price! All of this can be had at the Frosted Mug on Sunday, May the 1st! The price was verified by the staff, but you might want to call 546-4149 just to make sure! John's Frosted Mug is located at 15861 US-160 in Forsyth Missouri!

Area eateries offer a Thanksgiving meal!

As of this post, Thanksgiving was just ten days away! So, on Thursday, November 26 many folks will be sitting down to reflect. Traditionally, that means a table full of all sorts of wondrous food. Thanksgiving is a time to feast and to reflect on the good fortune we all enjoy in the land of the free. However, for many reasons, not all of us have the opportunity or the time to go to all the fuss and bother of creating a multi course meal for ourselves or our loved ones! Thankfully, (for those of us who live in the small town of Forsyth Missouri), there are some really great alternatives!

A few Forsyth area restaurants will be open to help make your Thanksgiving the best it can be!  In this post, I'd like to mention a few that I'm aware of:

Charlie's Steak, Ribs and Ale - A very popular and upscale eatery that features a full service bar and plenty of seating space. Charlie's is offering a special Thanksgiving plate that will include; turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing and a roll! I'm assuming that there will also be plenty of gravy and butter to go with this wonderful feast! The cost is only $9.99  a plate and this  wonderful meal is being offered from 11AM to close (8PM). For those who want to enjoy a good breakfast, Charlie's will be open at 7AM! Charlie's is located at 139 Hwy Y in Forsyth and they can be reached at (417) 546-2011 for inquiries.

Frosted Mug
The Frosted Mug - A venerable location located on Hwy 160 will also offer a Thanksgiving meal experience that has become a Forsyth tradition over decades! The Mug is a down home dining eatery that features a full service bar and great food. I understand they have a great Thanksgiving meal, but currently have no idea (417) 546-4149.
The Longhorn Family Dining
how much it will cost. They can be reached at

The Longhorn - I eaten at the Longhorn over many years and have never been disappointed with the food or the clientele. This venue is a Forsyth favorite with fast service and great tasting food hallmarks! The eatery is located at 16039 US Hwy160 and can be reached at (417) 546-9751. I've been told they have a great meal for $9.99! Call them for the hours this meal will be available.

These kind folks who are giving up their Holiday in order to serve you, are very special people. Please make sure and tip them to the best of your ability!

The Frosted Mug revisited!

An aging, though venerable, watering hole! AKA, the Frote Mu!
It was a Late September day, overcast with a cool tinge to the air, a possible sign of colder fall weather to come. I had decided to stop at a bar known as the Frosted Mug, located on Hwy 160 in Forsyth Mo. A bar and restaurant that had been around since the time of Moses. There were nine patrons sitting at the bar when I came in, all of whom were drinking, with the sole exception of a gal to my left who was busy eating a large bowl of mashed potatoes with sausage gravy slathered on top. She eye me suspiciously as I sat a few chairs over and unlimbered my Kindle Fire. She was watching NASCAR on some kind of tablet and it wasn't very long before she began to accuse my tablet of interfering with her tablet. Such was life in a very strange century. When I glanced over at her, some gravy was dripping from her lower lip... I quickly looked away and studied the rest of my surroundings.

The Frosted Mug, structurally, is a squarish looking building that has a full bar that holds about 24 seated patrons (more if you crowd them together). There is also a small stage for performers, a dance floor and a pool room with two tables that are generally in use. The rest of the open space off to one side of the bar area contains about 10- 15 tables that could hold sixty or more eaters. Something that rarely happens as the establishment is almost never crowded.

While most of the service personnel are OK at what they do, Tuesday's now sees the return of a popular bartender that worked there almost a decade ago by the name of Judy. She is very efficient and rarely leaves one waiting for a fresh libation. In the evening hours, after 5PM, a younger set of bartender staff take over to handle the generally younger crowd that stops there after getting off of work. Sunday's in the early fall feature no less that five large screen TV's that display both racing and football. Howrah!

Over the years, I've had occasion to eat at the Mug both sit down and take home. Of the many and varied menu items offered there, I'm told it is the beer batter perch offered on Friday and cheeseburgers during the rest of the week that are the most popular. The pricing at this venue is competitive with the other five or so sit down eateries, while only the Mug and a nearby place called Charlie's offer full service bars.Be a little wary of who is cooking, however, some cooks working there are much better than others.
